About this site

This site is built and maintained by a real guitar player, Tony Hogan, to help other guitarists develop their skills. Regardless of style or musical personailties, the end result for most players is to create what he or she refers to as good music (this can mean something different to everyone). Even though there are differences in musical tasten the requirements are very similar for most people:

  • A decent instrument that suits your budget

  • A set of learning tools to raise the skill level

  • To enjoy the music that you are making

In some cases the following is also important

  • To let others hear how brilliant you are

  • To make money from something you love doing

  • To make a CD and be famous

Changes in the guitar world

Over the period of 30 years the resouces available have multiplied out of control. And as the web has now taken on a major role in the development of guitar education, it has also now become a place where anyone that knows how to throw together a website and also have good marketing skills can now set themsewlves up as an expert or distributor of music related products. You've only got to look at the guitar tab that's out there and it will give you a good idea of the 'quality control' that abounds on the world wide web.

The abundance of resources makes it difficult for new players to discriminate and a lot of misinformation is posted on the web. When I first started playing, there was very little available to educate you hn how to learn the guitar, and at that time there was really only Guitar Player magazine and also the English Guitar magazine as resources about what was happening in the guitar scene. Most players that wanted something more would buy Mickey Bakers Jazz guitar book and the rest was to follow quite a steep self-learning curve.

About the webmaster

I have played guitar for almost 40 years at various levels in the industy in a number of different styles. I have taught guitar for over 30 years and written the music curriculum fora private school. I studied with Ike Isaacs the jazz guitarist, the Indian Sarod player Ashok Roy, both these players are world class legends in their fields, I also studied with numerous other great players that passed on many useful tips but to be honest, not all great players are good teachers. And in some cases some great teachers are not even great players.

What is important?

Many or I could almost daringly say most teachers disregard the emotional side of music and in this case I don't just mean 'it's the feel that counts' and are busy trying to get you do do things 'their' way and become versions of themselves. Generally a very good teacher will help you develop a good technique to eanable you to express who you are. to become a good self learner is an extremely useful thing, because in the end only you can express what it is that you want say with your instrument

Why waste time on useless or bad resources?

On this site there are links to some good guitar resources. click on the guitar sheet music link to see some of the examples that I personally think are useful, this will take you to another page on my site.. It's better to have a few good solid things to help you develop than a wole pile of bits and pieces of information, half wrong tabs and borrowed downloads.
